Criminal Justice Reform Op-ed Published

AOL's politics page ran my op-ed on criminal justice reform. Here's a snippet:
Our nation's biggest criminal justice challenge isn't a surging wave of crime, but a deeply dysfunctional justice system that is not effective, moral or even sustainable. Our nation imprisons one out of every 100 adults, more than any other country in the world. One in nine young African-American men are behind bars, with more black men going to prison than serving in the military or graduating from college. In a country that hails itself as the land of the free, we send a greater proportion of our population to jail than either Russia or China.
Student Loan Op-Ed Published

I wrote an op-ed about student loans and the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act--which has passed the House, but not the Senate--and would do a lot to help bring down the costs of college and provide more money for grants for needy students. Here's a snippet:
Over the next few weeks, high school seniors will start sending off their college applications, hoping in return to get fat envelopes offering admission. But for many, getting admitted to the college of their dreams might prove bittersweet. With states slashing their higher-education budgets and jacking up tuition, families are finding it increasingly difficult to pay for college, and a growing number of students now must take out massive amounts of debt in order to graduate. One study released this month finds that the average debt for the class of 2008 topped $23,200, up more than 24 percent from 2004.

The New Yorker lists The Gardner Heist as one of the Best Books of 2009

The writers at the The New Yorker choose The Gardner Heist as one of their favorite books of 2009.
On the magazine's website, Jeffery Toobin writes: "“The Gardner Heist,” by Ulrich Boser, tells the full, if maddeningly inconclusive, story of the crime and the investigation."
I've been reading The New Yorker since I was a teenager, and it's a humbling honor to have the magazine praise my book.
The Gardner Heist featured on Fox

The Gardner Heist was recently featured on Fox's TV Show House. A character was reading it in bed as she squabbles with her husband. There's not a very clear shot of the book--but that's what you get for product placement that you don't pay for.

I’ve accepted a position as a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, a think tank dedicated to improving the lives of Americans through ideas and action. I've done consulting work for the Center since 2006. It's an honor to join their team as a senior fellow. I'll be writing mainly about education but also some criminal justice and social policy issues.
